I asked ChatGPT this question about the signal loss/gain that shows up on a users portal.

So this is from one gps unit, which is a typical report for the cell signal. 
Can you explain this to me what it means as if I’m almost a 5th grader

Think of the GPS unit as a kid trying to look out a window at the sky.

It needs to “see” several GPS satellites to figure out where the trailer is. Buildings, a metal trailer, trees, being indoors, antenna placement, or even where the trailer is parked can make that view better or worse.

Your report is basically saying:

• “GPS Connection Gained” = I can see enough satellites. I know where I am.
• “GPS Connection Lost” = I can't see enough satellites right now. I can't get a reliable location.
• Then it sees them again and reports “Gained.”

For example, yours shows:

6:26:33 PM: GPS lost
6:26:37 PM: GPS gained

That's only 4 seconds.

Then:

6:27:51 PM: GPS lost
6:34:20 PM: GPS gained

That's about 6½ minutes without a good GPS fix.

Then it keeps doing the same thing.

One important distinction: this screen is showing GPS reception, not necessarily cellular signal. Those are two different things.

The GPS talks to satellites to figure out where the trailer is.

The cellular connection is what lets the unit send that location and other information back to your server.

So a unit could have excellent cellular service but poor GPS reception. It could also know exactly where it is from GPS but temporarily have no cellular connection to report it.

What the screenshot says is that this particular unit is having trouble maintaining a solid view of the GPS satellites. Since it keeps regaining the connection, the GPS itself is working. Something is making reception marginal enough that it keeps falling below whatever threshold the unit uses to declare the GPS connection lost.

If this is happening while the trailer is sitting still, I'd be looking closely at antenna location and what's above or around the antenna. Metal is especially good at ruining GPS's day.
