We do a pretty decent amount of R&D work and testing behind the scenes at Trailer-Alarms.com.

Part of that means buying other systems and products that are already on the market, even when they aren’t being sold specifically for trailer security.

I want to know what other technology is out there. What sensors are available. How different services work. What somebody else has done well, and just as importantly, what doesn’t work very well for the applications we deal with.

Sometimes I’ll spend a few days testing something and decide it has some potential. Those units might end up with family or friends who can actually use them.

Others eventually find their way to the trash.

One of the more recent systems I purchased actually looked like it could be a good fit for a project I was working on. I reached out to the company with some questions and tried to communicate with them about their product.

Apparently, once they figured out who Trailer-Alarms.com was, the communication stopped.

I can only assume they saw us as competition rather than a potential customer.

Their loss.

It certainly won’t stop me from continuing to buy, test and learn about other technology.

We’ve been building trailer security systems for more than 20 years, but that doesn’t mean we already know everything there is to know.

Technology changes. New products come along. New ideas show up.

Sometimes we find something useful.

Sometimes we find another item for the trash can.

Either way, we usually learn something.
